This week, we have been learning some key skills of effective action writing.

  • Powerful sentence openers (e.g. ‘In a blur of panic…’)
  • Verbs that create a sense of urgency (e.g. swirling, tugging)
  • Short, sharp sentences that create impact (e.g. ‘Time seemed to stop’).

The children enjoyed some role play, imagining themselves as evacuees and overhearing a conversation, revealing that their host might actually be a German spy!

We then wrote from the first person, showing the dialogue that takes place in this moment. We particularly looked at how we can write effective dialogue that:

  • Moves the plot forward
  • Tells us something important about a character or situation

We have been blown away by the children’s creativity and enthusiasm and already the children are showing more control and skill in their writing.

In our spellings this week, we have looked at words that have an ‘ee’ sound (but with a variation of spellings): Spellings

In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting mentally and rounding numbers to the nearest million and hundred thousand. For practice sheets, please see here: Maths sheets final

In RE, we have explored the Five Pillars of Islam and ranked them according to which we feel shows the most commitment and in Topic we have been exploring the vital work that women had in World War Two.

Next week

  • In Maths, we will be deciding when to use mental methods and when to use formal written methods and we will also be diving down deep into negative numbers.
  • In English, the children will be using all of their skills from the last couple of weeks to write their own story about an evacuee in World War Two.
  • Swimming will be on Thursday.
  • Please remember to bring in a greeting in your home language to add to our Family Board.

We wish you a wonderful weekend.
