Welcome to week 2 of the UCPSpace Project!
We hope you enjoyed the launch of our new learning projects last week. This week, the anticipation is building as you experience a challenging twist to the project which will see you rescuing your new teacher from a far away planet…!

You’ve designed your rocket and established how to run it, now it’s time to launch the mission to outer space! You’re sitting in the pilots seat, mission control is counting down: 5…4…3…2…1… LIFT OFF!
- What can you see around you as you blast off into the stratosphere and continue into space?
- How is it affecting your senses? What can you see, hear, smell, taste, feel?
- How are you feeling emotionally? Consider the reason you’re going in to space and the build up there has been to this moment.
Today you will begin a sequence of diary entries recording your time in space. You will write a new diary entry each day this week. Each day this week there will be a prompt for what you can write your diary entry about. In each diary, remember to include:
- Date, time, Dear Diary and sign off with your name.
- Description through adjectives, adverbs and expanded noun phrases.
- A range of punctuation including semi colons, question/exclamation marks and speech marks.
Activity: In your diary entry today, write about your initial experiences as you entered space (as prompted by the questions above).

Oh no! There’s been a leak in the fuel tank and, due to loosing fuel, your rocket has crashed onto the wrong planet: Planet Pandora! Chaos reigns as your team members, now spread across the landscape of the planet, panic in this unforeseen crisis. As commander of your ship, it’s your duty to keep them calm.
Activity 1: Create top tips to share with your team on how to stay calm in a crisis. This could be a poster, a video or another format which you believe suitable for sharing this information.
Activity 2: In your diary entry for today, describe the moment of landing and sketch the crash landing scene.

The initial moments of the crash are now over and everyone has calmed down. It’s time to start thinking about how you can refuel and get off of this planet, back on course for your mission to reach the stranded teachers.
First things first, you need to explore the planet and the resources it has. Hopefully there will be something you can use as a supplement fuel source for your ship. If this is the case, you’ll need to remember where to find this fuel source so you can direct others to it. This means, that you need to map out the environment around you.
Activity 1: Create a map of your planet, remembering to use geographical vocabulary such as rivers, volcanoes, forest, mountain; the 8 points of the compass; and a key with symbols that help the reader follow your map.
For an extra challenge, include grid references on your map and – for an extra spicy challenge – contour lines.
Activity 2: In your diary entry today, describe what the planet Pandora is like. Use the stimulus from the videos to help you with your description, and add to it with your own imagination. Don’t forget to describe it using your senses (what can you see, hear, feel, taste, smell) and how you are feeling at this time.

Well UCPStronauts, you’re really not on planet Earth any more! The UCPS Research Centre has discovered the bizarre weather pattern of warmer nights and cooler days on this new planet (how is that even scientifically possible?!) To protect yourselves, you need to build a shelter. Consider:
- What are the best materials to keep you warm?
- Where is the best place to build the shelter?
- What resources did you see on the planet that you could use, when you mapped it yesterday?
- How can you work as a team to build the shelter quickly and efficiently?
Activity 1: Design a shelter that will keep you safe during the colder daytime temperatures. For an extra challenge, consider how this will affect your routine.
- Will you and your team sleep during the day and work at night?
- What extra dangers or challenges could that bring?
- If you maintain your current daytime routine, what challenges will that bring?
- How could you and your team ensure everyone stays safe during both daytime and night time?
Activity 2: In your diary entry today, describe the weather patterns and temperatures. Write about how you’re feeling and how the team is coping in these conditions. Explain what you built your shelter from and why.

Hooray! You’ve found a source of fuel that you can use on your rocket! You’ll be back on your mission in no time. Questions to consider about your fuel source:
- Is it one material? Or, is it made up of a concoction of materials, like a potion? (e.g. 4l of blue mud, 13kg of shaved tree bark etc.)
- How did you realise it was suitable? Did you try different materials or combinations, or was it an accident?
- How can you collect enough to last you for the remainder of your onward journey and the return trip back? Or will you stop on Pandora again on the way back?
Activity 1: Draw, paint or otherwise create your new fuel sources. For an extra challenge, write a report explaining what it is, where you found it and why it’s suitable.
Activity 2: In today’s diary entry, describe how you found the fuel source and what it is. Use the questions above to explain what happened and what your plans are.

- RadioBlogging.net is a LIVE daily radio broadcast that teaches literacy and is aimed at families.
- Read the latest chapters published daily for J.K. Rowling’s The Ickabog story.
- Literacy Shed provides stimulus videos and writing ideas.
- Pobble365 publishes a new image with suggested activities to accompany it each day and has a vast back-catalogue of writing ideas.
This is the perfect moment to explore lots of different books and read for pleasure. Please find below some links where you can listen to authors reading a large selection of books.

- First News is offering free weekly issues during this time frame.
- Get Epic is an online library with 40,000 children’s titles available to read.
- Oliver Jeffers’s will read one of his books every day. Readings will take place at 6pm UK time and are broadcast via Instagram Stories. All broadcasts have been recorded and will also be added to Jeffers’ website
- Poets are reading out their poems here, with online prompts offering comprehension questions.

Our Guided Reading text this week is about Mars – The Red Planet.
Activity 1 Retrieval Skills
Activity: Complete these questions.
Challenge: There is a small glossary on page 1. Go through the text and find additional words to add to a glossary of your own. This could be topical words related to Mars, or words you’ve never come across before, e.g. “blistering”.
Activity 2 Retrieval Skills
Activity: Using the “Quick Facts” box, which number facts can you determine about the difference between Earth and Mars? E.g. difference in diameter.
Challenge: There are a range of dates throughout this text. Create a timeline of the events. For an extra spicy challenge, explain why each event was significant. You could even decide on one event which you think was the most significant, and explain why.
Activity 3 Summarising Skills
Activity: On page 2, there is information about what makes Mars habitable. Create an advert persuading people to go and live on Mars. Make sure you reassure people that they’ll be safe, along with getting them excited about the prospect of moving there!
Challenge: Create a job advertisement for someone to operate the Mars Rover. Make your advert exciting and ensure to explain what the Mars Rover does and what knowledge or experience the person operating it would have to have before applying for the job.

ThinkUKnow has also developed a pack of 15 minute activities for you to do at home that explore different aspects of online safety. Each fortnight, they will release a series of new activities.

Handwriting & Spelling
If you would like to practice more spellings, Spelling Frame has home learning opportunities for you to work on. Pen Pals, the scheme of handwriting UCPS follows, is currently also offering resources for free.
Our spelling focus this week is silent letter.
Activity: Your spelling words are doubt, island, lamb, solemn, thistle, knight.
Challenge: Use these words in a sentence.
Active History is offering one month free access to their simulations, games and quizzes. They cover a broad range of historical eras.
AvantiSchools are providing free daily well being opportunities. “Stay home and be well.” You can register and find the videos here.
Singing is a great way to lift your spirits and connect with those around you. You can find songs with music and lyrics to sing on the SingUp website.
National Celebrations Challenges

Sustrans Outside In
Walking, cycling and scooting are great ways to contribute to keeping us active and healthy in body and mind. During this time where we are mostly required to stay at home, these activities become harder to do so.
