We have had another fantastic and productive week in Year 5, continuing to work hard on our learning! 

This week, in STEM, we looked at the life cycles of amphibians and insects! We looked closely at metamorphosis and how it occurs in the life cycle and read a really funny story about a tadpole and a caterpillar! We continued our project for this half term: Dynamic Coasts! Our enquiry question is: in what ways is Hunstanton under threat? Our focus this week was on oceanic islands. In English, we wrote poems about AJ’s trainers! Maths saw us continue to focus on multiplication, consolidating the different methods and finding out what works best for them; in PSHCE we concluded our unit on friends and family, considering different emotions people might experienced!

Next Week:

Next week,  we will continue to make progress in our multiplication in our maths learning, consolidating our knowledge on the contracted and grid method and exploring 2-step word problems. We will also make our way further through Running on Empty in English and Guided Reading! In STEM, we will take a closer look at the life cycles of mammals and birds. Geography will see us take a closer look at the physical features of coasts. In PSHCE we will make a start on our unit on drug education. Our phoneme focus in spellings will continue to be ‘er’.

Please note that there is planned strike action for two days on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March next week. Further information on home learning tasks will be sent out to you for these days.

Home Learning

  • Read for 30 minutes each day
  • Practise times tables for 10 minutes each day
  • Try one of the arithmetic challenges at 
  • Practise and revise year 3-4 and year 5-6 spellings that we have covered this spring term, so far, to ensure they have been transferred from working memory to long term memory. You can find these spellings here:


We would like to set children some challenges to complete at home to extend their learning from this week!

  • Geography: can you summarise all of our learning on islands and create a leaflet explaining all the different types?
  • STEM: research the life cycle of an insect or amphibian that undergoes metamorphosis that we haven’t looked at in class. Draw and annotate a diagram of their life cycle!
  • Spanish: Our focus this half term is on clothes. Have a go at this cross word…La Ropa Crossword WITH WORDBANK



The children will continue to have outdoor PE on a Wednesday so it is important to remember correct kit!

Please ensure children have weather appropriate PE uniform in school. This includes a hair band to tie back long hair and tape to cover any ear-rings that cannot be removed.

Forest School

Next week, the children will continue to have forest school with Mr Longden! Please make sure they have weather-appropriate clothing to wear! There has been a slight change in the days for next week:

Fuji class on Monday

Olympus class on Tuesday

Sagarmatha class – NO FOREST SCHOOL 

Mobile Telephones

Only children who have permission to walk home alone may bring a mobile telephone to school. It must be given to the class teacher at the start of each day and will be returned at home time.
