It has been, without a doubt, one of the busiest starts to a half term! Year 5 have jumped into a new topic called ‘Force Majeure’ which explores plate tectonics and their impact on physical and human geography. Many children have already engaged with independent home learning projects as a result of their interest in the topic – very impressive! The highlight of this week was certainly the school Diwali festival held on Thursday evening, with a spectacular fireworks display from Cambridge Fireworks and wonderful performances from a range of musicians and dancers.
We have started an English unit of work that will take us across several weeks. The final outcome of this work will be a non-chronological report on volcanoes, so this week the children have been building their subject knowledge.
We have also started a new Guided Reading text called ‘Floodlands’, which is based in a world where Norfolk has been flooded due to rising sea levels. The book has captivated the interest of the Year 5 children, as well as giving them a lot of knowledge about the geography of their local area.
Olympus and Fuji started their swimming lessons this week, which will continue on a weekly basis until the 3rd December. The lessons were a lot of fun and children have begun to learn new swimming strokes as well as becoming more proficient in the strokes that they already know. Sagamartha will take part in swimming lessons in the Spring term.
The Maths resources from this week can be found here: Maths Sheets Week 1 Short Multiplication The focus has been multiplying a one digit number by a two or three digit number in both the expanded and compact methods. Next week we will be doing the same with division, so please continue to help your child practice their multiplication and division facts.
We have also started to recap the grammar and spelling from Year 4 and introduce the Year 5 curriculum. Our spelling and grammar focus for this week can be found here: week 1 skills
