From our own Year 5 correspondent:
In Year 5 this week we have been linking guided reading, or GR for short, with English. We’ve been putting ourselves in Lieutenant Shepard’s shoes; Lieutenant Shepard in the main character in the guided reading text, The Silver Donkey. Year 5 got into groups and made role plays all of which had Lieutenant Shepard in them. Now we are writing before and after stories across a two page spread about him.
“I’ve been really enjoying English reflecting on our guided reading text, The Silver Donkey,” stated a Year 5 student.
As we conclude the Silver Donkey we are looking forward to our next book in guided reading, The Jamie Drake Equation.
We were also delighted to welcome Ms Thillai into school (virtually) for a superb session about her career in dentistry – inspiring and stimulating. It has left us with lots of useful thoughts about STEM careers and the skills required.
In topic we puzzled over the coded Zimmerman Telegram:
In maths we got to grips with Roman Numerals and negative number.
Monday: We are Scientists session 3: STEM visitor
All week: focus on healthy living and physical activity as we all know how important this is for everyone’s wellbeing and growth. The inspiration came from the BMI can do it challenge, which we encourage you all to sign up to as individuals or as a family https://www.bmicandoit.co.uk/. The children will be taking part in different types of physical activity with their class: these include the friendship run competition throughout the week, yoga and a whole school virtual run. Children are invited to bring in pictures to share what they do at home to support their health and wellbeing, these will contribute to a whole school healthy living display. We hope you will join us in celebrating the value of physical activity.
Friday: school breaks for half-term
- Please could children have tracksuit bottoms or leggings as part of their PE kit. We will be having all our PE lessons outside until Christmas.
- After half term, we will be reading The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jamie-Drake-Equation-Christopher-Edge/dp/0857638408. It would be wonderful if you could purchase a copy for your child. Please would you allow them to annotate the book to aid understanding.
