We Have Lift Off!

This week, the University of Cambridge Primary School is embarking on a three week project that will culminate in the children meeting their new class teacher at the final Virtual Family Friday on 17th July!

  • The UCPSpace Project draws on English and creative thinking skills as they journey through space to reach their new commander (new teacher!)
  • Many activities in the UCPSpace Project will link to the ‘Unlock Challenges’.
  • Children, make sure you watch the UCPSpace videos before completing the challenges on the blog!
  • Maths will continue as usual on the blog, although there may be additional Maths opportunities explored in the UCPSpace Project as it progresses.
  • Year 3, your unlock challenge for Maths this week is to practice your 4x tables!

Your weekly emails will look like this:

  • Monday – No email
  • Tuesday – No email
  • Wednesday – No email
  • Thursday – Virtual Gardening Club link
  • Friday – Links to videos for following week: UCPSpace projects, overview for coming week, Tuesday wellbeing video and Premier videos

Monday 29th June

Maths:

This week we will be multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. We will then be using this to help us measure mass.

UCPSpace Project 1:

  • Year 3, the mission to rescue your teachers is down to you! Grab a suitcase and get packing! Think of items that you would need to take with you to space. When you’ve got a list, go round the house, find the objects and pack them in your suitcase!
  • Once you’ve collected your objects, write a list of your items. Remember to use commas in your list, and for an extra challenge explain why you chose each item.
  • You could write your list in your home learning journal or you can use this template if you’d prefer: Pack a suitcase and write a list

UCPSpace Project 2: (to be completed over 2 days)

  • Now you have your suitcase, it’s time to prepare for space!  As a UCPStronaut, the first thing you need to organise is something to travel in. UCPSpace is a new organisation, so we haven’t built any rockets yet. The first thing you will need to do is to find out all about rockets. Here are some useful websites that you can use to help you with your research…
  1. https://www.spacekids.co.uk/apollo/
  2. https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/stories/nasa-knows/what-is-a-rocket-k4.htm
  3. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/space/reference/rockets-and-rocket-launches-explained/
  4. https://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/k-12/rocket/rockpart.html

  • Your next task is to design your own rocket, thinking about the research that you have done. Your rocket needs to have moving parts, such as levers or switches, to help it function. In addition to this, it should also involve magnetic forces, e.g. for movement or defense. Your extra spicy task (if you’re feeling brave!) is to build your rocket! You could get crafty, use lego, or a 3D simulation on the computer.
  • You can complete this project in your home learning journal or use this template if you’d prefer:Rocket research and design templates

Wellbeing:

  • Today you will be drawing a ‘sea of optimism’ with Ms Janes (video link will be emailed)

UCPSpace Project 3

  • Well done, you’ve designed your rocket! To make sure other UCPStronauts can fly it, we need you to create an instruction manual on how to operate it.
  • When writing your instructions, make sure to use words such as ‘if’, ‘when’ e.g. “When you pull the lever, make sure…”
  • Before you write, you might want to role play, imagining you are sitting in your rocket. Think through each step carefully – how will it take off? What happens after lift off? How should you land it? Use your research from the last couple of days to help.
  • You can do this in your home-learning book or you might want to practice your touch typing and write it on the computer. Alternatively, you can use this template: Instruction Manual Template

  • Gardening (video will be emailed to you)

Sustrans Outside In

  • Walking, cycling and scooting are great ways to contribute to keeping us active and healthy in body and mind. During this time where we are mostly required to stay at home, these activities become harder to do so. Sustrans Outside In therefore aims to provide ideas and inspiration to bring health and wellbeing activities into the home.
