Year 2 have had a very exciting start of term and we have been blown away by their creativity and passion for all thing books!

This week has been Book Week so our learning has looked a little different, with all learning focused around ‘The Tin Solider” by Hans Christian Andersen. The children have enjoyed getting fully immersed in the story and have been exploring the book in different ways. Using the book as inspiration, the children have been focusing on writing, reading and oracy skills (with lots of Art mixed in to help with our retelling).

In writing, we began by looking at the different emotions in the story. We then looked at diary writing, exploring the purpose and features. Using our knowledge of the story, we finished the week by writing a diary entry from the perspective of the Tin Solider.

In Reading, we focused on expanding and explaining vocabulary. We then used the story to enhance our questioning and information retrieval skills. At the end of the week, we read the Ugly Duckling, and compared the two stories.

To develop our Oracy skills we have been looking at how to be powerful story tellers and have lots of opportunities to share and develop our ideas on the story. We used the theaters and puppets that we created in Art to assist with our story telling. To round of the week, we performed our diary entries to our friends in our class.

In phonics, we have been looking at the different spellings of the sounds /u/.

Next week:

In Maths, we are looking at two digit addition (e.g. 34 + 25), and exploring the different methods that we can use.

In English, we are going to be writing poetry based on the story, ‘Jar of Happiness’. Children will be making here own happiness jar and will need to bring in a Jar for Tuesday.

In Topic, we will be focusing on fashion in the 60’s and comparing it to today. In PSHE, we will be exploring friendship and in Science, we will be designing an experiment to test the the properties of bouncy balls.

Key notices:

Can children please bring in a clean glass jar (with the label removed) for Tuesday. These will be used in English.

We will be launching our spelling challenge next week, children will see how many of the Year 2 Spelling words they already know and set themselves their personal challenge. The launch video that was emailed out before Christmas can be found here (https://youtu.be/9HG3rUCrbNg).

Best Wishes,

Year 2 team.
