We have had a truly fantastic first week returning from our summer holidays and transitioning into Year 1. We are so grateful to all our families for how well prepared all the children have been both emotionally and practically (PE starts next week so please do make sure you bring in your child’s PE Kit if you haven’t already done so…).

Our focus this week has been ‘Learning How to Learn’ and our new year 1s have certainly risen to this challenge, demonstrating their passion for discovery and readiness to persevere when learning becomes tricky – well done!

Compassionate Citizenship has been a central focus of our discussions, looking our our values of respect, empathy, trust, gratitude and courage – reading stories and sharing our own stories and perspectives on what these different values look like in action.

We have also been practising our new routines, ensuring that we are familiar with our indoor and outdoor learning environments, what to do at break times and lunch times and how and where to line up at different transition points throughout the day.

We have been doing some very respectful ‘busy learning’ in both the indoor and outdoor learning environments and should be really proud of how beautiful these spaces look as a result of all of our hard work!

Next Week

We will launch our exciting new topic ‘Adventurers & Explorers’ (you can read the topic overview here) and begin to introduce some of our core subject areas:

In English we will start reading the fascinating tale of the Quayside Cat and our written focus will be on writing labels, lists and captions which will also extend to many aspects of the Year 1s child-directed ‘Busy Learning’ time.

In Maths we are going to begin to look at comparative language and make comparisons between objects such as taller, shorter, larger, smaller.

In Phonics we will revisit a range of sounds that we learnt in Reception and provide children with a range of activities and games to help freshen our memories, practising reading and writing these sounds, embarking on the beginning of our wonderful adventures into the world of literacy!

Below are a selection of images from one of our Year 1 classes to give some insight into some of the things we have been up to. Look forward to seeing you all next week, have a wonderful restful weekend.
