Dear parents and carers,

It has been a wonderful start to our final term of Year 1! In particular, the children have enjoyed playing on the ‘big playground’ in preparation for Year 2.

In English, our focus book has been Claude in the City. We have been focusing on creating and describing characters and using time connectives (first, then, next, after that). This week your child could write a story about an animal or pet who ends up going on a big adventure!

In Maths, we have begun looking at numbers from 50-100. This week we have focused on confidently counting from 50 to 100 and completing number tracks using these numbers. Here is this week’s maths sheet if you would like to consolidate this at home. Independent sheets

In Phonics, we have been learning the different spellings for the /or/ sound.

We have identified the -or- spellings:

or – born, horn, pork, morning

aw – straw, draw, claw, hawk

au – autumn, author, cause, haul

Phonics screening check: next week, the children will be completing the phonics screening check which is a statutory year 1 assessment. Children will be asked to read real words and nonsense words with a teacher to determine how well their phonetical knowledge is developing. Some children have been given flashcards to practise with at home. Please run through these cards daily with your child and practise reading and writing words with these sounds in them to support your child’s understanding of phonics. Please be reassured that the assessment will not feel like anything out of the ordinary for the children and will feel similar to the teaching and learning they ordinarily partake in during school.

Here is a website that contains interactive games to support phonics. If you would like to practise the phonics screening at home, here are some previous assessments.

Revisit-Here are the sounds taught so far. Please review these with your child and continue to regularly revisit to consolidate learning.
