Wow! Another super busy fun filled week in Reception! Children have thoroughly enjoyed all the rainbow challenges and have worked very hard in a joyful way!

Our focus this week has been on speaking and listening to each other in a respectful way, so our story this week ‘Spots or Stripes? has really helped to build on these skills. It is a tale about a tiger and a leopard who have a ‘squabble’ about whether spots or stripes are better. Unfortunatley, this then turns into a fight! This theme led wonderfully into small group discussions, giving individual children the opportunity to offer solutions with reasons as to why other animals have good qualities to make a great leader/King or Queen of the jungle.

In Maths, we have been measuring a crocodile (not a real one of course!) using a variety of objects and then recording our results in a chart. We have also been learning vocabulary associated to weight e.g. heavy, heavier, heaviest and light, lighter, lightest.

Our Focus: Zoo animals

Text: Zoology (non-fiction) This is a fantastic large encyclopeadia about animals.

Phonics Focus: or and ur

Adult Led Group: We will look closely at animals and their features then replicate these through detailed observational drawings using good grip and co-ordination.

Maths:  Positional Language-beside, next to, behind, under, infront, beneath, above etc

Rainbow Challenges:                                                                                                                                            Red- To use mixed materials to make an animal habitat – small boxes needed                                      Blue- To compare two objects by weight                                                                                                    Yellow- To write a fact about an animal of their choice                                                                            Green- To construct a zoo using mixed construction materials                                                        Purple- To go in an animal hunt and then move like the animal you find

  • Please send your child into class with a small -medium sized box for the Red Challenge and write their name on it please. (Cereal sized is perfect)
  • Thank you to those parents who have very kindly offered to help on our trip to Shepreth Zoo.
  • Next week, on Friday 15th March we will be celebrating Red Nose Day.We will have a non-uniform, red themed day. If children want to dress up in red they can bring in a GOLD (£1, 2) coin to give to their teacher in the morning.Throughout the day the children will also take part in an assembly to learn more about Comic Relief and its mission to end child poverty.We look forward to celebrating Red Nose Day with the children and thinking about what we can do to make a difference!
