Our first week of full time school has been a huge success. The children are quickly becoming familiar with their classrooms, the grown ups and the expectations at school.
We all started to work in our learning groups this week. The children should all know if they are in ‘Apples’, ‘Bananas’, ‘Grapes’, ‘Strawberries’ or ‘Blueberries’. These are mixed ability groups that we use to organise the children during carpet time, small group work and other activities such as PE. This week, each day one group worked with an adult to draw their family portraits in their special learning books. The children thought about family in their homes and elsewhere. It has been wonderful seeing the children begin to feel confident speaking to their learning group.
Next week, we would like to add some greetings to our family boards. We have all of your beautiful family photos on display so around them we would like to add greetings in your home languages. On Tuesday, you will find some pieces of card and pens outside each room ready for you to write ‘Hello’, ‘Good Morning’ or another special greeting in your home language. Please add your child’s name and what language it is and ask your child to take it into the classroom with them.
We will also be starting phonics next week. We will begin Unit 1 which includes the sounds ‘a’, ‘m’, ‘s’, ‘t’ and ‘i’. We will be focusing on the sounds that each of these letters make and will not yet be introducing the letter names. Phonics will be taught to the full class group during carpet time. This weekend, you could speak to your child about how we should behave during phonics e.g. listening to each other, sitting on our bottoms and trying our best to join in.
In Maths, we will be focusing on the numbers 1 and 2. We will work on our formation of the numerals, locate the numbers on a number track and experiment with different ways of representing 1 and 2.
Reminders: We have a few jumpers and cardigans missing. Please could you check that you do not have the wrong items of clothing at home and return and extra items to school.
Lots of the children (and grown ups!) were very tired towards the end of the week so enjoy a well deserved rest this weekend!
